HENCKE SIMONE

My name is Simone Hencke, I am 23 years old and originally from Düsseldorf, Germany. I have just completed my first semester of the M.A. program in Global Environmental Studies at Sophia University.

I am very grateful for having been chosen as one of the recipients of the Life Support Scholarship. As my parents are not able to support me financially I have been working a lot of shifts at my two part-time jobs in order to be able to pay my tuition fees, rent and other daily living expenses. During the past two months in particular I realized how working this much at times affected my academic performance. The Life Support Scholarship allows me to reduce my work hours for the next semester which is taking a great burden off my shoulders and letting me focus more on my studies.

I am particularly interested in the way environmental issues are portrayed and framed in news media as well as new, digital media, and how this sparks environmental awareness in individuals and inspires them to take actions in favour of environmental protection. After completing my M.A. degree at Sophia University, my dream is to work in the field of environmental communication, specifically environmental journalism, and to act as a bridge between the often scientific world of environmental problems and the general public. The Life Support Scholarship is certainly helping me come closer to achieving this dream.
